The Story of Hera
✨ ️It has been said, so mythology goes...✨️
Hera, Queen of the Gods, referred by some as the most beautiful, was the goddess of women, marriage, families and childbirth. She was sister and 7th (and final) wife to Zeus. She rejected his advances over and over again, so Zeus tricked her into marriage by turning into a cuckoo and pretended he was cold. Hera saw the poor animal and took pity on it, so she brought the cuckoo up to her breast so she could warm him up, and Zeus transformed back into his true form and had his way with her. To hide her shame, Hera agreed to marry Zeus. During their marriage, Hera remained faithful even though Zeus did not.
Even though she was the goddess of women and marriage, Hera is often depicted as the jealous wife, who took revenge on her husbands many lovers and children. Her animal symbol is the Peacock because it is believed that she had the eyes of her faithful giant watchman Argus (referred to as the All-Seeing, as he had 100 eyes) placed on the peacocks tail in honor of him 🦚. Zeus had Hermes kill Argus so that he may continue his affair with Hera's first priestess, without the All-Seeing watchman reporting back to his jealous wife.
Zeus turned the priestess into a heifer to protect her from Hera's jealousy, and when Hera found out, she sent a gadfly to torment the heifer while she wandered the land.
Hera was associated with all aspects of the life of women. The most beautiful of the immortals, Homer gave Hera the description "ox-eyed” because of her large full eyes, and described her as tall and striking.
Hera played a prominent part in the tale of the Tojan war. When only she of the gods and goddesses was not invited to the marriage of Peleus and Thetis (parents of Achilles), Eris (daughter of Zeus and Hera, goddess of strife and discord) threw among the guests a golden apple inscribed, “For the Most Beautiful.” Hera, Athena, and Aphrodite all claimed the apple. Zeus then assigned the decision to Paris, who was the handsomest at the feast. Each goddess offered Paris a bribe: Hera offered sovereignty, Athena offered conquest, and Aphrodite offered the most beautiful woman for his wife. He accepted Aphrodite's offer and so caused the Trojan War, during which Hera assisted the Greeks (while Zeus sided with the Trojans).
Hera had 6 children with Zeus - Ares, Hebe, Eris, Enyo, Angelos, and Eileithyia, and had one child without Zeus, Hepheastus. It is said that Hera became angry with Zeus for fathering Athena without her (Zeus produced Athena full grown from his forehead, without a mother), so Hera slapped the ground and Hepheastus was born. Hepheastus was so ugly though, Hera cast him from the heavens.
Hera was known for her vengeful behavior on anyone who crossed her, both mortals and Gods, but she was also revered by women as the patron and protector of them.
She ruled over the heavens and skies with her husband, where she took her place at Mount Olympus as the Queen Of The Gods.
🦚💍👩‍🍼 Fun Facts About Hera 🦚💍👩‍🍼
🦚 Hera was the Queen Of The Gods on Mount Olympus, goddess of women, marriage, childbirth and family.
💍 Hera is most likely the first deity the Greeks made an enclosed roof temple for.
👩‍🍼 The word Hera comes from the Greek word Hora, which translates to season, which is often interpreted as "ripe for marriage".
🦚 Due to Hera's immense hatred of infidelity, she is often thought of as being a deity that punished adulterers.
💍 Hera was thought of as the most beautiful of the immortals by some, and she took great pride in her beauty. She would accentuate her beauty by wearing a gold crown. She was quick to get angry if she thought her beauty was being threatened.
👩‍🍼 Hera is the reason Hercules killed his family and wife Megara. Hercules was Zeus' illegitimate child with a mortal, and Hera's jealousy drove her to constantly try to get her revenge on Hercules. She made him go temporarily insane with her powers, and he thought his family was the enemy he was fighting, so he killed them with his bow. Athena eventually broke him from the curse by throwing a rock at his chest. The slaying of his family is the reason for the 12 labors of Hercules, as his penance.
🦚 Every 4 years, an all female athletic competition took place in Hera's honor. It primarily consisted of foot races by unmarried women.
